Email to Rick this morning. If he understood ANY of it, I'd be impressed, not being cursed by that mind-fogging tome known as the U of T undergrad handbook & timetable:

Hey sweetie! WORST day! =( i put my alarm on for 5:15, then put it on for 5:35, THEN i did that stupid thing i did last night and pulled the plug out of the wall which turned my alarm off. woke up at 6:30, (STS opened at 6AM), RAN into parents' room, saw clock, SCREAMED, RAN downstairs (may i add i had nothing on but a bra and my white dress shirt? underwear is for OTHER people), grabbed phone, grabbed course list, started dialing, got through on 6th or 7th time (pretty good), put in student number and PIN number and did the voicemail thing all the way to "please put in the course identification number", did THAT and the system said it was temporarily down and hung up on me. This happened three times and my wrist is now sore from dialing. i think next year i'm just going to bribe some official with money or booze or sex and get it done early.
FIRST, the one course i NEED to get my degree was full. PANICK.
SECOND, the second half-course, that linguistics course, was full. at 7AM!!! 7:30 actually, but still!!! an hour and a half!! so i added the rest of my courses, got my dad to keep dialing while i dashed up and downstairs looking at my schedule and seeing what might fit in, rearranged WHOLE thing in a desperate flurry of caffeine and pantlessness (haven't had any tequila yet but by GOD i'm going to), added courses i've never seen before, rearranged shit... FINALLY worked out a schedule, it sucks and i haven't got friday off but the courses are good and i guess that's more important, right? Still, my one goal this year was to get friday off. =( but i suppose a more IMPORTANT goal is to raise my GPA. the Anthropology course i had to choose to fit everything in isn't even on my course list for acceptable anthro-semiotics courses, but i've emailed my prof and asked if it's ok, very hurridly relating it to postmodernism. I think he'll say yes, he's really nice about that. My only major prob is that the next year's semiotics course, which i HAVE to take to graduate, VIC420Y1Y, has a pre-requisite of VIC320Y1Y, which is the course i was going to take this year but was full. so i might be screwed, or i might have to take summer school, which is fine by me. but i think he'll let me off that too, because he's nice that way AND he's the one who teaches the 420 course. ihopeihopeihope. i think a nice big bottle of wine will be in order if all this works out. in fact, 2- one for him and one for me. actually, screw wine, i'm having tequila. ANYWAY, so this year i'm taking:

-PHL244H1F, HUMAN NATURE (instincts, motivations, behaviourism, psycho-analysis; very happy with this one)
-PHL236Y1Y, PHILOSOPHY & RELIGION (meaning of life and death, existence of god and afterlife, etc. EXTREMELY happy with this, the prof has a 100% retake rate and it's about stuff i love AND have studied.)
-VIC221Y1Y, semiotics OF PROFESSIONS (happier with this than the other one i was supposed to take, VIC320Y. i've had this prof last year, she's very sweet, and the course deals with lots of cool post-modern stuff.)
-VIC211Y, FILMIC ADAPTATIONS OF LIT. (haven't changed this one. basically, "books on tape", which means i'll be watching a lot of movies this year. if you ever get off work early on tuesdays (like, before 3pm, maybe 4pm), that's when they show the movies in class, if you're interested.)
-LIN200H1S, INTRO TO LANGUAGE (was taking before, but in first term. now it's in second term. bleh. not thrilled with this, but that's cuz i don't find that kind of stuff THRILLING!)
-ANT366Y1Y, ANTHRO OF SOCIAL MOVEMENTS (it fit. that's about all i have to say about it. actually, it might be kinda cool, the prof is supposed to be good and it deals with "how anthropologists have traditionally studied social movements and how new social movements have challenged anthropologists to rethink some of their ethnographic methods and approaches. Some specific movements covered include those related to indigenous rights, environmentalism, refugees, gay and lesbian rights, biotechnology, new religions and globalization." actually that sounds pretty dry. the G&L rights, biotech and new religions might be cool, but i could care less about environmentalism. yay greenpeace?)

ANYWAY, so i BADLY wanna call you and whine and cry and complain because all my beautiful plans went to hell, but in a way these courses are better, as long as Danesi approves them, and i was ACTUALLY hyperventalating on the phone while i was trying to pick courses. =/ So this means that until december, i'll be done at 3PM on mondays, 7pm on tuesdays, 3pm on wednesdays, 4pm on thursdays and 3pm on fridays. in second term, january to may, everything's the same except monday, i'll be done at 3pm. Hey, that's not so bad- if you get off at 4pm most days, i'll be able to go see you.

i've figured out next year's schedule, and although i haven't checked all the degree requirements and everything, i think i can fit everything i'm missing into next year, the missing semiotics (VIC320) and anthro (Ant329) courses. at least it's a backup plan. i'll double-check later, right now i kinda wanna throw up. =( argh. probably go back to bed.

Andrew, you too, are the Man. The banner would have been just as funny if it were yours, because you two are nearly identical in personality anyway. :)
